Composed 2023 for SATB choir and piano
Spring was written June 2023
Several years before the song was finished, an old friend got married in central Nebraska. There was a break between the ceremony and the reception, and I ended up in the city park, enjoying the beautiful weather. As I was sitting in the park, I had the urge to grab pen and paper, and the text for this piece came quickly:
Text
What beauty lies in the green, green grass of spring
That comes with the rebirth of all the earth and all good things
A cool spring breeze ignites the trees to sing,
“Awake the day, the robin and the jay,
Let all creation rise anew to greet the sun’s sweet rays!”
As the grasses grow and the breezes blow
So the world shall know
It is spring
It is springFlowers burst wide
Hours drift by
As lovers lay soft in the grass
Praying this moment never pass
Laying
Loving
Holding
Breathing deep the spring
Those words sat for years, always intending to become a song but just stuck in a folder in a drawer of a desk I didn’t use much. During my first semester of graduate school, my advisor Carla Kihlstedt pushed me to bring the music to life. I got halfway done that semester, and finished the following summer.
