Composed 2023 for Marching Band
Jeanne d’Arc was premiered on October 7, 2023 by the Nebraska City High School Marching Band. Drill was designed by Emily Roth.
I was thrilled to be approached in early 2023 with a commission to write a marching band show for a dear friend. She had already done some idea sketching, and when she suggested Joan of Arc my mind immediately started swirling with musical and visual ideas.
After the field entrance music, the show is a continuous performance with no movement breaks. Many songs of French and English origin or significance are referenced throughout, including Susato’s La Mourisque, Tchaikovsky’s Орлеанская дева (The Maid of Orleans), Méhul’s Le chant du départ, Jerusalem, and Picardy.
I was thrilled to watch the band’s performance and progress throughout their marching season, capped off by a superior rating at the 2023 Nebraska State Bandmasters Association State Marching Festival.
