Composed 2021 for Concert Band
2020 was premiered on April 30, 2021 by the Fillmore Central High School Marching Band.
Each year when I start our Symphonic Composition Project the piece is just named whatever year it happens to be. You may have noticed that “2020” did not premiere in 2020 – like everything else in spring 2020, it got shelved. When we came back to the Symphonic Composition Projects the following school year, I added in some new themes from the students on top of the original sketch. The result is lots of layered rhythms – though the tempo never changes, several rhythmic patterns happen simultaneously, with patterns of 4 happening over patterns of 3, marimba and xylophone trading accents, and lots to keep each player in the band engaged all the way to the end. When it came time to name the piece, the students decided that the complexity of the song matched the complexity of the year, and “2020” stuck.
